In the spirit of helping the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society meet their goals for raising as much awareness and funds as possible, this post is about Barb Stayton, a fellow candidate for Woman of the Year. While our campaign is focused on Shanna’s Story and our upcoming Bingo Party (learn more about that and RSVP today!) Barb has chosen to sell cookbooks to help raise the funds for her campaign.

Birthday Bingo Bash to be held for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society®

In honor of Shanna Smith and Josiah Nelson, the Shanna’s Story team plans fundraiser to raise support and money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society®.

Indianapolis, IN – March 12, 2009 – The Shanna’s Story team, a group of Indianapolis area individuals who include Raquel Richardson, Stacia Renbarger, Amanda Ryan, Erica Gardner, Kyle Lacy and Shawn Smith, have taken on the challenge of raising money to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® by hosting a Birthday Bingo Bash at the Knights of Columbus on Saturday, April 11^th at 6:30 P.M. The Knights of Columbus is located at 2100 E. 71^st Street, Indianapolis.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society®, headquartered in White Plains, NY, is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. The LLS mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Since its founding in 1949, LLS has invested more than $600 million in research specifically targeting leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

About Shanna’s Story: Now, until 4 p.m. on Friday, April 24th, we are on a mission to raise big dollars for Boy of the Year Josiah Nelson and in honor of Shanna Smith, who passed in 2006 from complications associated with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Join us in our mission to share Shanna’s story and raise money to support almost one million Americans living with leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

I want to thank everyone who is helping us reach our goal of helping Josiah, LLS and telling Shanna’s Story. Shanna would be thrilled to be honored to help such a fabulous little boy and such a fantastic foundation. Many of you who come to this site may have known her and I encourage you to share a story!!! Many of you also have a story of a family member or friend who you have lost, maybe living with cancer, or a motivating survivor story. Please share those stories with us here!

The Launch of Shanna’s Story

A few weeks ago I was approached by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to participate in a fundraiser for their research, cause and mission. The typical gala fundraiser was being replaced with a compeititon for Woman/Man of the Year with local men and women competing for the title over a nine week period.

Then I met Stacia Renbarger. She asked me about this fundraiser as she saw it as a status update on my Facebook page. I shared what I knew and thinking that she was a cool gal I would like to work with and get to know better, I asked her if she wanted to help. A couple days later I learned she is really the person that should be competing as she has the story – Shanna’s story – her soulmate friend of 28 years before the disease took her life.

Isn’t it amazing how life and events bring people together?

In our first team meeting, none of us really loved the Woman/Man of the Year tag, and I shared how we would be doing this for Shanna. Kyle said, that’s our story, it’s Shanna’s story and our mission became real with a name, a person and a true pull we were all able to get behind.

So here is Shanna’s story as told by us, as shared by you and as a meaninful way to help almost one million Americans living with these diseases find support in research and patient services.
